I don't find Geddy's voice annoying, it's cool in a weird way and moley I've listened to one or two your band's songs and your singer has a decent voice.

PostPsychosis666 05-07-2006 01:54 PM

I just think Geddy has very clean, crisp vocals. I think there amazing. Anyone else singing in rush just would sound right.

shiftael 05-07-2006 10:33 PM

I like Geddy, too but know someone who hates Rush because of the singing, mostly, I could definitely see that point of view, too how someone coudl think that he was.

Rush is an amazing band ... a band that really brought progressive music out to people..they are known as huge influences too soo many bands now a days...progressive and not.

boo boo 05-07-2006 11:19 PM

My only problem with Rush's merit as a prog band is that they were only prog at the altmost high point of their career... Their early efforts (mainly their first two albums) were not very prog at all, owing much more to Led Zeppelin, The Who and Black Sabbath than anyone else... They didn't really venture into prog teritory until Caress of Steel, and that was primarly only in the two long epics The Necromancer (no relation to the Van Der Graaf Generator song of the same name) and The Fountain of Lamneth.

Their first true prog album was 2112 and they were basically a prog band until the early 80s, when they adopted a more accessible radio-friendly, new wave tinged sound much like their peers Yes, Genesis and Jethro Tull did around that same time, in the 90s they returned to the more basic sound that they achieved with their early pre-prog era stuff, their last authentic prog record was Moving Pictures.

Well not everything, they have had their low points just like every other band... It's just that even when they are at their worst, people are still interested because of the ridiculous amount of effort they put into all of their work.

Laces Out Dan! 05-07-2006 11:26 PM

Well said

stakeraiser 05-08-2006 10:28 AM

Waiting for a new Rush album, wasn't too impressed with Vapor Trails, hoping for a return to form

Most of their stuff does- great band.

SimeyC 05-24-2006 06:03 AM

I've been to see them in concert twice in the last few years...they are awesome in concert...they keep on changing...Peart is amazing, Geddy is superlative and Alex...is Alex...quirky, funny and a superb guitarist!

fenderjazzforever 05-24-2006 12:58 PM

has anyone had the chance to pick up the new two disc set? Their record lable decided to put together all their hits onto a new two disc set called Rush:Gold. It's really very entertaining and it has enough music to occupy a few after noons. it has 29 tracks including "Tom Sawyer", "Xanadu", "New World Man", "The Spirit of Radio" and other good stuff. I was very eccentric when I heard xanadu and tom sawyer start playing, and the spirit of radio was an entertaining treat too.

eherenma 05-25-2006 01:13 PM

Rush is ****in great. Most of the time. They wrote some pretty awful stuff through the late '80s, but then again, who didn't? They've definitely written some of the best rock songs and albums out there. Just the fact that they've produced more Gold albums than anyone else shows their longevity and greatness. But why aren't they in the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame?

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Anthrax...just to name a few. :)

You have a great point though, Rush should be in the hall of fame, but then again, Black Sabbath & Lynyrd Skynyrd JUST got in for some reason or another.

Well, Sabbath and Skynyrd are a bit more important and influencial in the context of rock.

well, good point, in a broad spectrum, but still, prog needs to be represented in the hall of fame.

boo boo 05-25-2006 09:06 PM

You can say that again... Their bias against prog (and metal) is ridiculously obvious.... Tom Pety inducted before King Crimson and The Moody Blues??.... The Pretenders inducted before Yes and Iron Maiden?...Screw those bastards.

Their claims about musical impact, innovation and influence getting you inducted is a load of bullocks, by that criteria, King Crimson have been more worthy than half of the artists they have inducted in the past 15 years, they should have been inducted the day they were qualified for entry, which was way back in 1994, since it has to be 25 years since your first recording until you can be inducted... The board members are clearly going by personal preference, some members have even stated that they would make sure that KC would never be inducted, proof that The Hall Of Fame is a load of elitist bullshit.

eherenma 05-26-2006 10:09 AM

i think the fact that Rolling Stone has a huge amount of influence over who gets inducted and who doesn't has contributed to the fact that Rush hasn't made it in... RS has always had a thing against Rush, and probably King Crimson as well.

Laces Out Dan! 05-26-2006 03:29 PM

Because they're not Generic??:)

Well, they did give The Moody Blues Days Of Future Past and Iron Maidens Number Of The Beast a 2 star rating and *NSYNCs No Strings Atached a 3 star rating.

Rolling Stone???.... Generic?.... The hell you say. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y28..._surprised.gif

They also gave every early Black Sabbath record a one star rating. They gave every 70's AC/DC album less than one star.

Not that either of those bands are prog, or related to Rush in any way...just pointing out how incredibly idiotic RS are.

haha good point there. wasnt all the music of that time based on being rebellious and NOT sounding the same? it's just a shame that rush gets put down because of their originality

boo boo 05-27-2006 04:36 PM

RS are incredibly biased against prog and metal, and even jazz to a lesser degree... Their 500 greatest albums list had seven jazz albums, SEVEN.... Three Miles Davis albums, two John Coltrane albums, One Ornette Coleman album and one Stan Getz album.

On their list of 100 greatest artists, only one jazz artist made the list, Miles Davis.... And he was below Eminem and AC/DC.

And then theres the infamous guitarists list... Hardly any jazz players at all.... Only Les Paul and John McLaughlin, and guess what?... They were heaps below Jack White, Jack f*cking White.... Apparantly Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery were not good enough for the list.... But Joan Jett sure was.

Biased soul sucking clowns.

Yeah, their best guitarist list was pathetic.

boo boo 05-28-2006 06:48 PM

My favorite was Kirk Hammett at number 11 above Jerry Garcia, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, The Edge, Mark Knopfler, Diik Dale, John Fahey, Steve Cropper, Bo Diddley, Brian May, John Fogerty, Robert Fripp, Eddie Hazel, Scotty Moore, Frank Zappa, Les Paul, T Bone Walker, John McLaughlin, Pete Townshend, Tom Verlaine, Jorma Kaukonen, Dicky Betts, Link Wray, Mick Ronson, Steve Howe, Eddie Van Halen, Lightnin' Hopkins, Johnny Winter, Robert Quinn, David Gilmour, Randy Rhoads, Tony Iommi, D.Boon, Robby Krieger, Angus Young and Greg Ginn... And then theres all the other great players they left out... Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Andres Segovia, Paco De Lucia, Sabicas, John Williams, Wes Montgomery, Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, Carl Perkins, Duane Eddy, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Doc Watson, Roy Clark, Albert King, Billy Gibbons, Pat Matheny, Joe Pass, Allan Holdsworth, Leo Kottke, Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, Mark Ribot, Steve Hacket, Alex Lifeson, Adrian Belew, Johnny Marr, Billy Zoom, East Bay Ray and several others.

And of course, Kurt Cobain and Jack White in the top 20 is completely laughable (i think both are great, but top 20 players they are not).... On the bright side, i was happy to see John Frusciante, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Tom Morello, Adam Jones, Kevin Shields, Thurston Moore, Vernon Reid, Trey Anastasio and Derek Trucks make the list.. They're among the best guitarists we have today, IMO.... And i was amused to see Johnny Ramone so high on a greatest guitarists list, however i do think he deserves to be in the top 100, for his overwhelming influence alone, but not at freaking 16, somewhere in the 70s/80s region would have been more appropiate... Anyway, i don't think the list is completely bad, i'll give credit where its due and i think Dave Fricke (who likes teh prog, so he can't be all bad) tried his best to offer an alternative to standard guitarist lists... I was happy that the list wasn't plump full of shredders and neo classical wankers like Batio and Cooley.... But overall the list lacked consistancy, it simply should have been called Rolling Stones 100 FAVORITE guitarists of all time, no one should complain then.

Rush Rocks!!! Yyz!!

Seltzer 02-02-2007 02:04 PM

I play bass and love prog, so naturally every Rush song is a musicgasm for me. Not to mention the contributions of Lifeson and Peart.

The Unfan 02-02-2007 02:08 PM

Rush own pretty much every band that gets mentioned here. Everything about them is solid, especially in the early years which felt a bit more experimental.

shiftael 02-03-2007 04:54 PM

Rush rocks..
they';re so aweosme they even seem to have to simialr threads on here?
But seriously. Rush is teh awesome!!!!

Laces Out Dan! 03-15-2007 10:31 PM

Rush is IMO the best band of their era..and the most influencial. Probably should be in the top 10 for greatest bands EVER!

Trauma 03-15-2007 10:35 PM

If you don't like this band you should burn in hell.
